Hush Child

Hush child;

Secure within these arms

They will not judge you

Or bind you with iron and will

They will cradle the cherished

And kiss the softest part of your head

Without wondering why it fits so perfectly against lips

 Hush child;

As the world grows cold and cruel

Remember there’s laughter too

And never forget the feeling of new things

And the days that the rain falls a little too hard

Smile for the sake of smiling

And remember those times before and the ones to come

Hush child;

Please don’t tremble as the leaf caught in the wind

There’s no more monsters beneath your bed

They’ve crawled into the world and donned suits and ties

Assumed the face of friends and loved ones

And they’re marching up the lists

Never forget that you’ll always have a home here

Circled in arms grasped because home is never a place outside

Hush child;

As you learn the lessons of time and cruelty

And the joys of love to fall, and the scrape of your knee

Never forget how you looked back to see if you should try again

And never remembered that it was time to stop

Walk with your head held high

Scattered messy notes clutched between your fingertips

Hush child;

And know, always

That you are loved
